Biofuels
can prevent Climate Change –
either a little or a lot. In general, because
plants and trees are the raw material for
biofuels and because they need carbon dioxide
to grow, the use of biofuels does not add
CO2 to the atmosphere; it just recycles
what was already there. However, because
fossil fuels – such as natural gas
and coal – are needed to make biofuels,
biofuels are not quite “carbon neutral.”
A recent analysis shows that corn ethanol
reduces global warming emissions by 20%,
and cellulosic ethanol by 85%, compared
to gasoline. Biodiesel reduces greenhouse
gas emissions by 41% compared to diesel
fuel.
