The latest meeting of the IECC, a model building codeestablished by a public hearing consensus process amongst state and local code bodies, efficiency experts, builders and others and that is overseen by the International Code Council, has resulted in model residential and commercial codes for new buildings that will achieve a30% increase in energy efficiency. The full release can be viewed here.
The IECC commercial building code efficiency performanceis also increased by 30%. In addition to requiring highly efficient materials and equipment, the new model commercial building codes call for commissioning of new buildings so that energy performance is monitored and maintained at appropriate levels.
While this latest code only applies to new building sector and not renovations, it is a big step in the right direction for our building stock. Many of the Building STAR rebates were based on IECC and ASHRAE codes, as they increase, so does the potential energy savings from such retrofit programs.
